Hello, my name is Jenifer L. Spratley, I am the founder of COCOZOË , I have melanin-rich skin, and this is my story.
When I was a little girl, I contracted a bacterial infection called bullous impetigo, a highly contagious skin infection that causes large fluid-filled blisters on the trunk, arms and legs of children. If you have melanin-rich skin, the inflammation can leave severe scaring and discoloration. I was left with dark spots all over the lower part of my body leaving me with very unattractive legs. As a child, it was devastating, and I would wear knee-high socks, even in the summer, to cover up the discoloration. As I grew older, I realized there were no safe products available to fade the dark spots, so I had to learn to live with discolored, dull, dry skin while covering up and lacking confidence to wear the clothes that I desired to wear. Eventually, I became aware of one or two bleaching creams that would help fade dark spots, but these creams were harsh, toxic and extremely dangerous.
After much research and learning that melanin-rich skin requires ingredients that address its unique molecular structure, I began experimenting and mixing natural ingredients and COCOZOË was founded in 2013 in my kitchen in Peachtree City, Georgia. I formulated, mixed, packaged and sold our products to Whole Foods Stores in the Metro Atlanta, Georgia region, malls, grocery stores, hair salons, boutiques, hair shows, corporate events, online and to anyone that would allow me to do a demonstration. After a major attempt at self-funding the business, we were not able to scale and continue at a time when we decided in 2016 to move back to Virginia to help aid my sick Mother. The business would limp along for another couple of years and eventually came to a halt but because this brand was birthed in my heart from God, I could not rest until COCOZOË relaunched in 2024
COCOZOË is a collection of body & hair care products crafted exclusively for melanin-rich skin and curly dry hair. Our proprietary clean formulas will hydrate, exfoliate and even your skin tone so you can uncover with confidence.
